A feast of colour and texture. For this project, our goal was to capture the lively ambience of an Israeli ‘Shuk’ market and bring this vibrancy to a family-owned restaurant in Sydney. Nestled in the heart of Rose Bay, amidst bustling cafes and shops, this locale required an equally lively and inviting atmosphere. The result is full of character – a rich, vibrant space that perfectly reflects our client.

The Approach

While not a complete renovation, we approached this project with care, mindful of existing features such as the tiled floors, kitchen and outdoor seating area, which were to be left untouched. Our focus was on enhancing the restaurant’s aesthetic by renovating the front enclosed section of the space. We realised our vision by blending bright and patterned encaustic tiles with forest green leather upholstery. The richness of these selections is echoed in the handmade tiled table tops which further aids in transporting the diner into the heart of the Middle East.

The Details

We embraced the Israeli ‘Shuk’ vibe, making the bright Moroccan tiles the focal point and guiding force behind our design. Drawing inspiration from these tiles, we curated earthy tones to harmonise the space.

The custom-made tables are the heart of the space – a place for family and friends to gather and indulge in their favourite falafel. To realise this vision, we sourced and purchased cafe table bases and tiled the tops using Spanish handmade tiles.

Terracotta tiles encircle the basin area, while forest green leather banquette seating adds warmth and comfort. To evoke a rustic charm, we crafted a feature joinery piece out of recycled timber at the front of the shop. This feature serves as both storage and a display for products like pickle jars, spices and trinkets, immersing visitors in the market experience. Additionally, we incorporated bronze and backlight features to complement our design choices, adding a touch of elegance and cohesion to the overall ambience.
